Found an Injured Waterfowl?

If you’ve found a bird that is showing any of the following signs- please call us:

  • cannot fly

  • cannot walk, or is limping

  • is visibly injured

  • is covered in ants and flies

  • is lethargic

An adult waterbird of any kind tends to be aggressive when it’s injured. If you do need to grab it, please make sure you have an adequate box or carrier prepared in advance.

If at all possible, it is better to corner the bird into a box, using a broom or a stick to coax it in.

If you do have to grab it please take full precautions while doing so:

  • use protective gloves

  • wear sunglasses or protective eye gear

  • use a blanket or a big towel to grab it

While grabbing the animal, try being as gentle and calm as possible, keeping it’s stress levels to a minimum. A stressed bird can compound its injuries or may even die. Putting the towel or blanket over its head can calm it down. Make sure to grab it carefully by its body while keeping its head covered until you put it in the box.

Once in the box, make sure to keep it in a warm, calm and quiet environment.
